Success at Last Week's International Tiger Summit!

New Commitments Provide Hope for the Future of Wild Tiger Populations

There are as few as 3,200 tigers living in the wild, and this number continues to decrease due to habitat destruction and poaching. To combat this problem, the International Tiger Conservation Forum was held November 22-24, 2010 in Russia by representatives from the 13 countries where tigers live. A plan and funding commitments have been approved to help double the number of tigers by 2022!



Hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the summit secured a commitment of approximately $127 million in new funding from governments to support tiger conservation. The 13 participating countries will also endorse the Global Tiger Recovery Program over the next five years.

The success of the tiger summit is a crucial step for these big cats. However, threats such as poaching, the rising demand for wild tiger parts and products, and rampant habitat loss still exist.
